Welcome to Region 16’s Blog: Agriculture and Beautiful Landscapes

Nestled in the Panhandle of Texas, Region 16 boasts a distinctive square-shaped landscape, bordering New Mexico to the west and Oklahoma to the north and east. With its 61 school districts and 3 Charter schools, our region is representative of remote, rural charm. Amarillo ISD is our largest district with 29,729 students, and Grandview-Hopkins ISD is our smallest district with just 50 students. Region 16 ESC, opened in 1966, proudly stands as the inaugural Education Service Center in Texas laying the foundation for the network of 20 ESCs that now spans the state.

The awe-inspiring Palo Duro Canyon is located in Region 16 and is the backdrop to the iconic TEXAS outdoor musical, captivating audiences for 58 seasons. Our region is also home to West Texas A&M University and Amarillo College, recognized among the nation’s finest. Beyond academia, Region 16 is a vital hub for agriculture, contributing 15% of the nation’s beef production, with Hereford, Texas earning the title as the Beef Capital of the World. Yet, amidst our achievements and natural wonders, it is the spirit of our people that truly defines us. With unwavering pride and a deep-rooted sense of community, we extend a warm welcome to all!
